Julia Sherwood left her homeland at the time of normalization in the former Czechoslovakia. Having been born to a famous couple of intellectuals with a clear stance towards authoritarian regimes, she was not allowed to study translation at the university. At the end of the 1970's, the whole family emigrated to Germany. During the years, Julia fulfilled her dream and started translating Slovak literature into English. Together with her husband Peter they now live in London and make Slovak literature available to the world.
