Košice without iconic monument

No more flood-lit wooden huts on the top of a roof above a block of flats in Košice. This Monument of folk architecture by the artist Tomáš Džadoň has been removed due to complaints from the block's inhabitants. The project consisted of 3 original wooden barns that were relocated here from the central Slovak village of Párnica and the eastern Slovak village of Liptovská Teplička. The unusual pedestal of the contemporary piece of art attracted the attention of not only Slovak but also foreign journalists and tourists for the past 3 years. "For many inhabitants of the block of flats it was their first encounter with contemporary art," said Tomáš Džadoň. "The project triggered our discussion about public spaces; that the corridor is as important - or even more important than the beautifully furnished flat behind its closed doors," concluded the artist in his speech, thrown as part of the formal farewell with the monument on May 2.
